Gonorrhea

The Facts

  • Gonorrhea can also cause infection in the rectum. 

  • Diagnosed with a urine sample or swab.

  • Symptoms can be mild. 

  • If left untreated, gonorrhea may cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). These complications can include: 

    • The formation of scar tissues blocking the fallopian tubes ​

    • Ectopic pregnancy (outside of the womb) 

    • Infertility 

    • Long-term pelvic/abdominal pain

When to Get Tested?

Sexually active individuals should get tested yearly if they are: 

  • Younger than 25 years

  • 25 years or older with these risk factors:

    • New or multiple sex partners ​

    • Sex partner with an STI

Signs and Symptoms

Most women do not have any symptoms, and if symptoms are present, they can be mild and often mistaken for a bladder or vaginal infection. Some symptoms include: 

  • Painful or burning sensation when peeing

  • Increased vaginal discharge 

  • Vaginal bleeding between periods

How to Lower Your Risk?

  • Refrain from having sex

  • Only have sex with someone who is not infected and only has sex with you

  • Use condoms, if used the correct way

  • Washing your genitals, urinating, or douching after sex will NOT prevent any STD.
