Common STD's
Gonorrhea
Causes infection in the genitals, rectum, and throat and is spread by having vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Common in people ages 15-24. A pregnant woman can give the infection to their baby during childbirth.
Chlamydia
A disease that can cause permanent damage to a woman's reproductive system if left untreated. These damages can make it difficult or impossible to get pregnant and potentially cause fatal ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside of the womb). Chlamydia is easy to treat and cure.
Genital Herpes
A sexually transmitted virus often goes unnoticed unless an outbreak occurs. Blood tests may help diagnose genital herpes.
Syphilis
A sexually transmitted infection can cause serious health problems if left untreated. The disease can develop in four stages; primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary. Each stage shows different signs and symptoms.
Human Papilloma Virus
HPV is the most common STI whose health effects can be prevented by the HPV vaccine. It can be spread by having vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someone with the virus and through close skin-to-skin touching, even if symptoms are not showing. HPV is most common in the late teens and early 20s.
Trichomoniasis
"Trich" is an infection by a protozoan parasite called Trichomonas Vaginalis that can be transmitted through vaginal sex with someone who has it. Women can get the diseases from infected men or women and usually infects the vagina.
